How SeismoTotal works
Three different tools, with one clearly identified source.
1. Live map
Your browser loads the official USGS GeoJSON feed and refreshes it every five minutes. Pan, zoom, filter by magnitude and open the original record.
2. Historical explorer
Choose dates and minimum magnitude. USGS returns the catalogue; SeismoTotal counts and groups the sample by month.
3. Coordinate estimate
We count recorded events within a radius. The observed annual rate feeds a Poisson model: P(≥1)=1−e⁻ˡᵗ. This does not predict earthquakes or replace official hazard maps.
Source and limitations
Data: U.S. Geological Survey. This is an educational tool, not an alert system or seismic-hazard study.
